Hi Izabela
FAQ Friday question, and this is easily in my top three of all time:
"What supplements should I actually be taking?"
I'm going to give you a rule instead of a list, because a list gets lost and a rule lasts.
Here it is.
A supplement fills a gap that food left. That's the whole job.
So for any bottle you're holding, one question: what gap is this filling, and do I have it?
Not "is this good for me."
Nearly everything is good for SOMEBODY. The question is whether you have the gap, right?
If you can't answer in one sentence, you're not supplementing. You're hoping.
And hoping is expensive.
Now the part that saves people the most money, and almost nobody mentions it.
A supplement you can't absorb is a receipt.
If your digestion is poor, if your stomach acid is low, if your gut is inflamed, you can buy and religiously take the most expensive thing on the shelf and pass most of it through.
Which is why I sort digestion out before I add anything. Every time, in that order.
So the honest answer to "what should I take" is usually: less than you're taking, and later than you think.
And the gaps that genuinely do show up in women over 40 are boring ones. They come from how most of us eat, and where we live.
-
Not enough oily fish, so the calming fats are low while the inflammatory ones are high.
-
Not enough sunlight, if you live where I live, for most of the year.
-
Minerals running low, which shows up as sleep, cramps, regularity and stress, and gets blamed on your age.
-
Protein lower than you think, which your muscles need more of after 40, not less.
Boring. Cheap. And far more likely to be your actual problem than whatever was trending in January.
If you did Monday's cupboard job, go back to the pile you couldn't explain and run the gap rule over it now. That's the pile the rule was built for.
And if you didn't, do this instead, it takes two minutes.
Pick the single most expensive thing you're currently taking and answer the question out loud. What gap is this filling, and do I have it?
If the answer is "I'm not sure," you've just found your first cancelled subscription.
Be kind about it, Izabela. This isn't a test you failed. Every one of those bottles was bought by a woman trying to look after herself with the information she had. Okay?
We are here to learn, not to judge ;)
Love,
Vale
