Hey again,
ICYMI, our biggest issue of the year is finally here. The 2026 Best of Dallas guide is officially on stands now, and I am not too proud to beg you to read it. This year's list has hundreds of honors for every corner of our home — music, food, sports, shopping, and of course, arts and culture. I've gotten a chuckle from from several readers who have mentioned the "Best Place For A Couple to See Someone From Across the Bar and Like Their Vibe" category. IYKYK.
Of course, I wasn't the only one whose sleep schedule was... varied while working on this year's issue. The arts & entertainment section was a team effort from freelancers Preston Barta, Bryson "Boom" Paul and Austin Zook. My music and culture editing partner Alyssa Fields also graciously lent her signature snark to a few categories.
I hope you'll dive in and be reminded of just how much there is to celebrate in this city's underrated (I will always stand by that!) arts and culture scene. For me, the best part of this special issue is getting to beat the drum on the embarrassment of riches around here that makes choosing a singular "best" a tall order in any category. In case you've missed it, or if you just aren't much of a social media person (it's chaotic these days, no judgement), the Observer's culture section has a recurring video series called "This is Dallas Culture." The series was conceived from our fatigue from hearing the lazy, invalid dismissal that "Dallas has no culture," because quite frankly, that's bullshit. So, we've decided to spotlight different pockets of our city's vast cultural scene, from visual arts to fashion to music and everything else under the cultural umbrella.
Our latest video features Patty Evans, founder of Oak Cliff Sandlot. He played in a competitive league for years, but got a little sick of "assholes." So he made his own ultra-inclusive league, and it's beloved. BTW, social media editor Jordan Maddox took the mound after filming, and it hit a home run in our hearts.
