What to expect in the week ahead:

▸ World leaders gather in New York on Monday for a week of high-level meetings at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Expect Iran’s nuclear ambitions to be high on the agenda, as well as AI safety and the climate. The assembly takes place as candidates make their pitches to be the new secretary-general, who will take office at the start of next year.

▸ On Wednesday, Indonesia’s central bank holds its first monetary-policy meeting with its new governor. Destry Damayanti will hope for a better relationship with the government than that of her predecessor, who resigned in July over a disagreement with the finance minister about growth strategies. Concerns about Indonesia’s deficit have spooked foreign investors this year. 

▸ Donald Trump and Xi Jinping meet in Washington on Thursday. The summit between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies follows Mr Trump’s visit to Beijing in May, which produced a modest set of trade agreements and a commitment to aim for “constructive strategic stability”. Few people expect the meeting to yield a big breakthrough.
