James Wilson, the lost Founding Father of the title, was a complicated, imperfect human being, with a rich story that deserves to be told, even as we confront his flaws. It’s in confronting them that we perhaps learn what’s most useful for the moment we find ourselves, where questions of principle and politics have come to dominate our lives. Today, we’re marking the 234th anniversary of the day the U.S. Constitution was signed by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The Constitution is under 10 pages. You can read it or parts of it today right here. Or you can dip back into my book, Giving Up Is Unforgivable: A Manual For Keeping A Democracy, for its discussion of the Founding and Constitutional principles. Whatever you’re doing today, find a minute to be grateful we have a Constitutional Republic and that we’re fighting to keep it. That’s what we do here, every day.
