Dear Friend, Spanning 19 million acres, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is one of the largest intact ecosystems in the world.
It’s home to caribou, polar bears, muskoxen and wolves. It’s also central to the life and culture of the Gwich’in, a native tribe whose people have lived in the region for thousands of years. For the past 40 years, the fossil fuel industry and its allies have been fighting to open the Refuge to oil and gas drilling. In the face of new attempts to exploit the Refuge for oil and gas, many stakeholders are coming together to protect it. That’s why I’m inviting you to join us for a special webinar on Sept. 24: “Protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from Oil and Gas Drilling.” |

Moderated by Ellen Montgomery of Environment America, with speakers from the Gwich’in Steering Committee, the Alaska Wilderness League and Green Century, this webinar will provide environmental, cultural and financial perspectives on the importance of preserving the Arctic Refuge—and how each of us can help. |
Over the last 35 years, Green Century’s shareholder advocacy program has changed for the better the environmental practices of hundreds of companies. The debate over the fate of the Arctic Refuge is yet another test of the power of our shareholder advocacy and action.
In the last five years, the Green Century team has engaged nearly 300 companies, filed 181 shareholder proposals, and secured 93 new planet-protecting corporate policies. Here are some recent examples:

Mattel will provide more information on how it protects children from toxic chemicals in its plastic toys and packaging. After our engagement, Mattel increased the number of substances it monitors, limits, or does not allow from 3,000 to 15,000.

Bank of America, the second largest bank in the United States, released new forest protection standards for its clients around the world after two years of dialogue and a shareholder proposal from Green Century. These new standards require clients in beef, soy, palm oil, and forestry sectors to have or be pursuing deforestation-free operations and supply chains. Together, beef, soy, palm oil and wood products are responsible for nearly 75% of global deforestation.

Your money makes an impact. Join us on our webinar to see that impact in action in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or click to learn more about Green Century. |
