Under pressure to act on unpopular data centers, the House overwhelmingly voted to pass bipartisan legislation to shield consumers from higher energy costs when data centers are built in their communities.

The bill aims to put the onus and responsibility on tech and data center companies — rather than consumers — to pay for power upgrades required to operate large data centers. It now heads to the Senate, but not much more is expected to get done to address the issue until after the midterm elections.
