New Library Publication Explores Food and Folk Culture

The Library of Congress has published a new book exploring the role food plays in shaping culture, community and everyday life, drawing on the rich collections of the American Folklife Center as the center marks its 50th anniversary.

“Sharing Food, Sharing Culture: Foodways Collections at the American Folklife Center” explores foodways, the traditional cultural practices surrounding food, through more than 100 items from the center’s collections. Across four chapters, the book examines food and work; the ways people gather to prepare and enjoy food; connections among food, tradition and the landscape; and creative expressions about food through song.
