Javier Milei was elected to reform Argentina’s economy. This week, instead, he played the nationalism card and
noisily restated
Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, including in an interview with The Economist. The British (who won a brief war over the islands in 1982) are not about to hand them over. The gambit has more to do with Mr Milei’s declining political position at home.
A rather older British diplomatic dispute concerned William, duke of Normandy, and his claim on the throne of England. His success at the battle of Hastings in 1066 was commemorated with the Bayeux Tapestry—now back in Britain for the first time in 950 years, at the British Museum. The exhibition
looks set to be a sensation.
