A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Families,
We are wrapping up a short but busy four-day week at Daniels Run! It is hard to believe we already have our first week of September behind us. With the Labor Day weekend ahead, please remember that there will be no school on Friday, September 4, or Monday, September 7. We hope our Dragons and their families enjoy the four-day weekend and return on Tuesday rested and ready for another great week!
Lunch with Your Child
We know many families enjoy joining their Dragons for lunch! Beginning September 22, families are welcome to visit and have lunch with their child. Thank you for giving us these first few weeks to establish routines and help students settle into the school year.
Back to School Night & PTA Family Picnic – September 17
We are looking forward to welcoming families back to Daniels Run on Thursday, September 17! Back to School Night will take place from 5:00–6:00 p.m., and our PTA Family Picnic will be held from 5:00–7:00 p.m.
Fall Field Day – October 9
Save the date for one of the most fun days of the year—Fall Field Day! Field Day will take place on Friday, October 9. It is a great opportunity for families to spend some time at school and volunteer. We will share additional information and volunteer opportunities as we get closer to the date.
Blenheim Boulevard Construction
The City of Fairfax continues its roadwork along Blenheim Boulevard. Construction is scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., so we do not anticipate it significantly affecting our regular arrival and dismissal times.

Your Child’s Presence at School Matters
The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success by helping them build good habits.

Help Keep Our School Distraction-Free
Please remind your student that personal electronic communication or computing devices should be off and personally stored (i.e. backpacks) for the duration of the school day — bell to bell. This includes:
- Personal laptops and tablets.
- Smartphones and smartwatches.
- Other personal electronic communication or computing devices.

Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and extreme weather. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your child before and after school lockdown drills.
⚠️ Know Our Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

If students, staff, or families have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K to 12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3 to 7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15.

Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2 to 7 may be referred by December 15.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services:
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ms.Gaby Auza, school testing coordinator, at GMAuza1@fcps.edu by September 30.

Girls on the Run Fall Season is Here!
Hi Daniels Run Families!
My name is Natalie Wilson and I am a first grade teacher here at DRES. I am so excited to be the Girls on the Run site liaison and head coach for the fall season. I can’t wait for the opportunity to get to know each of the girls and watch them grow through quality time together, setting collective goals, and building lifelong relationships. I am so excited to get to work with some of my past students and learn about all the awesome things they are doing now! We will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school at 4:15-5:15pm. Paws & Claws Craft Club
Fairfax High School Leadership students are bringing their creativity to Daniels Run! Students in grades 1–3 are invited to join the free Paws & Claws Craft Club, an after-school program led by FHS students. The club will meet Thursdays from 3:45–4:45 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 24 and Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Snacks and all craft supplies are included. Space is limited, so families are encouraged to register early!
Fall Picture Day is October 2nd
Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Events are planned for the following dates at 6:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted):
- Wednesday, September 16, 6:45 p.m., at McNair Elementary School
- Monday, September 28, at Riverside Elementary School
- Monday, October 19, at Spring Hill Elementary School
- Monday, October 26, at Beech Tree Elementary School
