Plan for the Unexpected

National Preparedness Month is the perfect time to ensure that you have the ability to protect yourself and your family in the event of unforeseen disasters. In Arlington, families can take these four steps today:

• Build a kit. You can gather supplies over time, starting with items you may already have at home like canned food and first aid supplies. 
• Make a plan. Be sure that your household, including your pets, knows what to do. 
• Sign up for Arlington Alert. Receive real-time local alerts about weather, emergencies, County operation status, and more.
• Take a class. The County offers free training courses with its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and its Until Help Arrives program. 

Long Holiday Weekend

Arlington County Government offices and services will be operating on a modified schedule on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, for the Labor Day Holiday. 

If you're hitting the road, remember that permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays. 

9/11 Memorial Events

The Arlington County Police Department issued a traffic alert ahead of the 24th Annual Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff, & ECC 9/11 Memorial 5k on Sept. 5.

It is part of the series of memorial events in Arlington commemorating the 25-year anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks. 

• Come meet with Arlington County officials and community leaders at the 5th annual Hispanic Heritage Community Festival at Tyrol Hill Park on Sept. 5.
  
  
• You have a few more days to give feedback on the final draft concept for Drew Park. Review the plans and weigh in by Sept. 8.
  
  
• The County is hosting a virtual information session on Sept. 9 to share details about upgrades to the Resident Permit Parking system.
  
  
• Community members are invited to the Interfaith Social Safety Net Resource Fair on Sept. 9. Stop by anytime during the event to learn about County resources for residents in need.
  
  
• The County is conducting a study to recommend limits on impervious area in residential neighborhoods. Join a Q&A on Sept. 18 and share your thoughts by Sept. 27.
  
  
• The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church will host a free, nonpartisan Voter Safety Community Town Hall on Sept. 22. Registration is highly encouraged.

• First-time homebuyer looking in Arlington? You may qualify for an interest-free loan through the Moderate-Income Purchase Assistance Program (MIPAP).
  
  
• As the new school year begins, the Arlington County Police Department has announced 10 additional speed cameras in the County's PhotoSPEED program.
  
  
• This month, approximately 35,000 randomly selected residents of Arlington and Falls Church City will begin receiving juror questionnaires in the mail. 
  
  
• The Arlington County Police Department is warning the public about several recurring scams targeting the community.
  
  
• Listen up, bus riders. Starting this month, several bus routes will detour from Wilson Blvd. as part of Wilson Blvd. Streetscape Improvements project.
  
  
• Pre-order sales are now open for the County's Fall Native Plant Sale. Improve your yard for local birds and pollinators.
