Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella: Eggs

CDC declares outbreak over. FDA’s outbreak investigation has closed.

September 3, 2026

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, investigated illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to shell eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P.

Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC, a total of 134 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 18 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from November 21, 2025, to August 12, 2026. Forty-six (85%) of 54 ill persons with information available reported eating eggs before becoming ill. There have been 34 hospitalizations, and no deaths have been reported. CDC has declared this outbreak over.

As part of the investigation, FDA conducted an inspection at Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. in Texas and collected environmental samples. Three samples collected during FDA’s inspection were positive for Salmonella and match the strain of Salmonella Enteritidis causing illnesses in this outbreak by whole genome sequencing

Epidemiological, laboratory, and traceback evidence from this investigation, have determined that shell eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. in Texas are a likely source of illnesses for this outbreak. On July 22, 2026, Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. proactively recalled all white shell eggs and brown cage free shell eggs produced at their facilities in Texas. At this time, all shell eggs from this recall should no longer be available for sale for consumers.

FDA’s outbreak investigation is complete.
