Mike Vrabel didn’t have an update on Christian Gonzalez’s contract negotiations on Saturday morning. Just like he didn’t have an update earlier in the week. Or on the first day of training camp.
“Listen, we’ve talked about this contract,” Vrabel said. “It’ll either get done, and when it gets done, that’ll be the progress that’s made.”
Gonzalez’s negotiations remain ongoing and continue to be the biggest running story line of Patriots camp. Gonzalez has two years left on his rookie deal, and historically the Patriots would make him play out at least one more year before entertaining a new contract. But the Patriots clearly recognize his value, with Robert Kraft stating that they already offered to make Gonzalez the “highest-paid” cornerback in NFL history.
“I think we just want to have a policy that we want to re-sign players that we draft, we covet, and that we feel like can help us win,” Vrabel said.
If that’s the case, then the Patriots need to stop puttering around and get Gonzalez’s new contract done, for several reasons.
