Don’t Let Reply Speed Distort Hiring Decisions

When you evaluate job candidates, response speed may influence your judgment more than you realize; a quick reply can make someone seem more competent, warm, and dependable, even when another candidate has stronger qualifications. Here’s how to keep speed from unconsciously distorting your hiring decisions.

Define your criteria first. Before contacting candidates, decide which qualities matter most for the role. Clarify how much weight you will give experience, work quality, fit, communication, and responsiveness.

Evaluate speed deliberately. Ask whether fast communication is essential to the job. When it is, include responsiveness as an explicit criterion. When it isn’t, avoid treating a delayed reply as evidence of lower ability or interest.

Compare candidates consistently. Use the same evaluation process for everyone. Review qualifications, experience, and work quality before allowing communication speed to shape your decision.
