We’ll have amazing performances from students and families, food from all over the world, games, and a chance to see things that represent the many cultures/traditions in our community. It’s truly a night to celebrate who we are and where we come from.

We’ve also been hiding tiny bears around the school! If students find one, they can bring it to “This Is Us!” Night for a chance to enter our raffle and win some fun prizes.

This event is completely free and will be taking place in the cafeteria- all we’re asking is that our Cubbies show up, enjoy the evening, and support one another as we celebrate our community. See you there!

Summer Device Checkout Request

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is excited to support student learning over the summer. This Summer Learning Resources Webpage includes optional digital activities in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies for students in Grades K-6. The activities are grouped by grade level and match what students have learned in school this year. Families can use them anytime to review, practice, or explore new ideas at home.

Resources utilize digital tools that students may have used throughout the year such as ST Math, Science A-Z, Pebble Go, Gizmos, Newsela, MyOn, and Britannica Elementary.

These activities require a device to access, and some require students to log in through their FCPS Google account. Students may use a home device or their FCPS school device. If your child needs to borrow a device, they may check one out from their school no later than Friday, May 29th by filling out the CRES Student Device Checkout Form for Summer Technology below. (Devices will need to be returned by July 30.) Some digital resources in Clever may be temporarily unavailable in August in preparation for the new school year. If you need technology support, please visit the Families: Tools and Technology page.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe, and learning filled summer!

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.

As of May 20, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has decreased to 9.3%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can continue to have an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE. Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact us so we can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

Positivity Project

This week, our school will review the 24 character strengths and the five elements of the Other People Mindset.

Throughout the school year, we’ve explored these 24 strengths, learning how they help us build strong relationships and become the best versions of ourselves. Every 1–2 weeks, we focused on a different strength or element of the Other People Mindset.

The Other People Mindset involves five key practices:

  • Identifying and appreciating the good in other people,
  • Knowing our words and actions affect others,
  • Supporting others when they struggle,
  • Celebrating others when they succeed,
  • Being fully present and giving others our attention.

This year, staff and students have learned that positive relationships are built on these principles. As a school community, we have experienced firsthand how these connections help us become happier, healthier, and more resilient.

To practice and encourage the Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

PTA News

Dear Cub Run Families,

As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to take a moment to thank our incredible Cub Run community for the support, time, and energy you continue to give to our students, staff, and PTA. Because of you, we create memorable experiences and opportunities that make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies.

As many of our current board members prepare to complete their final terms over the next two years, we are looking for parents and caregivers, and teachers and staff, who may be interested in becoming more involved with the PTA — whether in a leadership role, supporting role, or simply learning more about how our PTA works behind the scenes.

Specifically, we are currently seeking:

  • A parent interested in working alongside our current PTA President during the 2026–2027 school year. Our President’s term concludes in 2027, and having someone work directly with, and collaborate with Lindsay throughout the year would help create a smooth and successful transition for the future of our PTA.
  • New VP of Volunteers, as the upcoming year will be Steph and Dan’s final term in the position.
  • New co-Secretary, as Megan’s term will be concluding after the upcoming school year. This is a shared position, and the second volunteer in the role has already committed to another two-year term. Responsibilities currently include helping manage our PTA newsletter and PTA website, making this a great opportunity for someone who would like to join an established team and share responsibilities.

In addition to leadership opportunities, we are also looking for volunteers to help lead and support some of our favorite Cub Run events and programs, including:

  •       Ice Skating Chair
  •       Spirit Nights Chair (fundraisers/sponsorships at local restaurants)
  •       Yearbook Chair
  •       Cub Run a Thon Committee

We are also excited to introduce a new board position for the upcoming school year:

6th Grade Liaison

We are looking for a parent — or small group of parents — to help make our rising 6th graders’ final year at Cub Run extra special! This role will include organizing and planning favorite traditions such as Volleyball Night and coordinating 6th grade fundraising activities. Let's make the last year for our oldest Cubbies one they'll always remember!

It is also important to share that a PTA can only continue with an active board and volunteers willing to fill key positions. Without enough members stepping into leadership roles, our PTA could eventually face the possibility of disbanding. We know that would be deeply disappointing for our school community, as the PTA plays such an important role in supporting school events, enriching experiences, family engagement opportunities, and special traditions that help make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies. Every role — big or small — truly helps keep these opportunities available for our students and families.

We know that stepping into a PTA role can sometimes feel intimidating, but you are never expected to do it alone. Our current board members are happy to support, guide, and help new volunteers learn the ropes. Many of our best ideas and strongest programs have come from parents who simply decided to give it a try.

Whether you have a little time or a lot, your involvement truly makes a difference.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these opportunities or would simply like to have a conversation about how you can help, we would love to hear from you!

President - Lindsay Reiner: president@cubrunpta.org

VP of Membership - Theresa Hassett: membership@cubrunpta.org

VP of Volunteer - Dan & Steph Sherwood: volunteer@cubrunpta.org

Secretary - Megan Oris and Amy Burke: secretary@cubrunpta.org

Treasurer - Subrata Chakraborty: treasurer@cubrunpta.org

Thank you for continuing to help make Cub Run such an amazing community for our students and families.

Warmly,

Your Cub Run Elementary PTA

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage
