In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. It is a dedicated time to honor and remember the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, and recognize the sacrifices made by the families of those officers. In this month’s News and Highlights from Across the Agency, Chief Penn reflects on our annual Observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day and the importance of always honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice here in Arlington County. The publication also features investigative highlights, crime and crash statistics, community engagement efforts and department news.

ACPD Participates in Click it or Ticket Campaign
The Arlington County Police Department is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the national Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign to urge driver to buckle up on every trip. The national high-visibility seat belt education and enforcement effort, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, began May 11 and will run through May 31, 2026.
In 2024, 22,713 passenger vehicle occupants were killed nationwide according to data by NHTSA. Nearly 50% of those killed were not buckled. With Memorial Day signifying the unofficial start of summer, more people will be out on the roads traveling to and from events and festivities. Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.
For more information on how seat belts save lives, visit the NHTSA website.
