Dear Families,
As we move through another exciting week at school, it was wonderful to see so many new kindergarten families visiting today during our kindergarten orientation. We are grateful for your continued partnership and support, especially with our recent early release schedule adjustments.
A reminder that our PTA meeting will take place this evening at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom — we hope you’ll join us as we continue working together to support our school community!
As a reminder, there will be no school for students on May 25th - May 27th for Memorial Day, Teacher Workday and Eid al-Adha. We look forward to welcoming students back on Thursday, May 28th.

Senior Returns to the Classroom That Helped Shape Her Future
Alexa Ralston, a Centreville High School senior who also attends Chantilly Academy, is part of the FCPS Teachers for Tomorrow program, which gives students hands-on experience in the field of education while they are still in high school.
For Alexa’s required internship, she chose to return to Union Mill, the elementary school she attended. She is working with Sara Kennedy, who was her special education teacher from fourth through sixth grade. Read about Alexa and Sara.
Help Make Our Field Day Character-tastic!
Get ready for a day of animated fun! Our annual Field Days are right around the corner, and this year’s theme is Animated Characters. We are looking for volunteers to assist with game stations, encourage integrity and cheer on our athletes. Whether you’re a fan of Buzz Lightyear, SpongeBob, the Minions, we’d love to have you there!
Thursday June 4th:
Kindergarten: 9:30-11:00 am
1st & 2nd Grades: 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Friday June 5th:
5th & 6th Grades: 9:15-11:00 am
3rd & 4th Grades– 1:15-3:00 pm

3rd Graders Learn About Strings
All 3rd graders recently visited the Strings classroom and learned about the violin, viola, cello and bass. Students heard each instrument performed and discovered if they like higher, medium or lower pitches better. Each student then was able to hold their favorite instrument and make first sounds on it. We hope that your child came home excited about a Strings instrument and wants to join the program for next year!

Strings & Band Registration
Current 4th and 5th graders are invited to join the Band or Strings program for next year! Current 3rd graders are invited to join the Strings program! We hope that your child is excited to start or continue an instrument! Please sign up by the last day of school, Wednesday, June 17th so we can create next year’s schedule.

Kindergarten Registration
Online Registration is now open for the 2026-27 school year!
Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Current families can register their new student through their existing ParentVUE account. (No need to register students returning to UMES.)
Our Registrar, Catherine Dubas, is happy to process registrations directly, as well. Please contact her at cmdubas@fcps.edu and be ready to provide your family’s address and rising kindergartener’s date of birth. Catherine will respond with registration details and documents necessary to start the process.
Spring registration puts you on the list for school communications, so don’t wait!
UMES PTA
PTA General Membership Meeting
PTA meetings are for all UMES community members, so join us virtually this evening (Wednesday, May 20th), at 7 PM! We will vote on our UMES PTA 2026/27 Board, get a Principal's Report from our school admin team, and talk about year-end wrap up including the Staff Volleyball Game vs. CES on May 29!
We need a quorum of 10 PTA members to vote so please sign in to join us. Please note that membership is required to vote.
This meeting will be virtual (Zoom) so you can join from anywhere! PTA members received a link in their eNews this week. If you’re not a member of the PTA, please e-mail pta@unionmillpta.org and we will send you the Zoom meeting information!

Annual UMES vs. CVES Staff Volleyball Game
It's that time Union Mill... time to take down CVES! The annual UMES vs. CVES Staff Volleyball Game will be on Friday, May 29 at Centreville High School at 6pm and tickets are now ON SALE!
