Question from the Mailbag: Why is there Construction on South Walter Reed Drive?

SWRD - May 2026

Question: What's the difference between the construction on Columbia Pike and on South Walter Reed Drive? Are these projects related?

Answer: The Columbia Pike construction was in service of the Columbia Pike Multimodal Improvements project, which was a massive reconstruction project going back many years to reconstruct 3 miles of roadway from inside out, including burying utilities to make room for streetscape improvements.

Goal of S. Walter Reed Drive Project

The South Walter Reed Drive Complete Street project is underway to implement aboveground transportation safety improvements on the approximately .5 mile portion of South Walter Reed Drive between 5th Street South and Columbia Pike.

The South Walter Reed Drive project will improve and widen sidewalks where space allows, build bus stop islands, add bike lanes, and reconfigure and add a four-way signal at the intersection of 9th Street South.

Though these projects are not related, utility tie-in work that was done as part of the Columbia Pike project under the intersection of South Walter Reed Drive accomplished some paving work that will save some time during the current project on South Walter Reed Drive.

Mid-County Transportation Projects Open House

Join County staff on Tuesday, June 2, for an open house to learn about upcoming in-design projects focusing on the section of Arlington between Columbia Pike and I-66.

The event will feature two projects that will soon open for feedback to inform the design of improvements on South George Mason Drive between Arlington Boulevard and Columbia Pike, and the Arlington Boulevard Trail (South Side) between South Glebe Road and South George Mason Drive.

South Walter Reed Drive Construction Update

Crews continue work to reconstruct the intersection of South Walter Reed Drive and 9th Street South as part of the South Walter Reed Drive Complete Street project. This work includes realigning lanes to reduce confusion, and installing a four-way signal to make through and turning traffic safer for everyone.

What's Next

In the coming weeks, crews will begin work on the east side/northbound lanes of South Walter Reed Drive between Columbia Pike and 9th Street South. This work includes preparations to widen the sidewalk on the east side of South Walter Reed Drive.

Crews will work in the roadway before beginning sidewalk work. After east side/northbound lane work, crews will start working on the west half/southbound lane of South Walter Reed Drive between Columbia Pike and 9th Street South.

The work between 9th Street South and Columbia Pike is expected to be completed by fall of this year. After the fall, crews will begin improvements between 9th Street South and 5th Street South.

Project Design Update

In the interest of safe bus operations, the planned bus stop island will be on the north side of South Walter Reed Drive & 9th Road South when the project is complete. Previous designs placed the stop on the south side of the intersection.
