Greetings! In this newsletter: A "Star Wars" land shake-up, California's gubernatorial candidates and Paramount earnings. For May the Fourth, unofficial Star Wars day, we've got an in-depth story by our Drew Taylor on Disneyland giving "Galaxy's Edge" its most dramatic change since the land launched in 2019 — even if casual park goers may not even notice. Disney re-themed parts of the land to incorporate elements of the original trilogy, bringing back fan-favorite characters from the 1977 film like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, while still keeping the remaining part of Galaxy's Edge rooted in the sequel trilogy timeline with Kylo Ren and Rey Skywalker. There's a middle section based on the timeline of "The Mandalorian." The change is designed to appeal to older fans who have more sentimental attachment to the original films. But it's also, as Taylor writes, a tacit acknowledgement that Disney's original plan of creating an intensively immersive world featuring more recent characters failed to take root with Disneyland guests. Now, Disney is ditching the immersion aspect and just playing the hits. While the changes may not immediately register with general park goers, it's a big deal for the "Star Wars" faithful. They come at a time when Disney needs to reignite fan enthusiasm for the franchise, particularly with "The Mandalorian & Grogu" hitting theaters on May 22. After Disney spent the last several years devaluing the "Star Wars" brand with countless Disney+ streaming shows, it's keen to bring people back into the fold. The question is whether this fan service is enough to move the needle when it's easier to be jaded about this franchise.
