Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Families,

This week is one of the most special dates on our calendar: Staff Appreciation Week. It is a time to pause and recognize the world-class individuals who make Woodson High School a true community. Behind every lesson plan and every graded essay is a person who cares deeply about your child’s future. Our staff members don’t just deliver education; they provide a steady hand, a listening ear, and a safe space for our students to grow. Whether they are staying late for extracurriculars, meticulously planning for the days ahead, or offering that extra bit of encouragement in the hallway, their heart is always in their work.

We are also incredibly grateful to our PTSO for their unwavering support of our staff. Their generosity and partnership ensure our teachers and team feel celebrated and fueled throughout this busy week.

It is also School Nurse Appreciation Week, and we want to extend a huge thank you to Celeste Delahunty and Josephine Namaganda for their diligence and care. They are our frontline of health and comfort, handling every situation with grace and ensuring our students are well-cared for each and every day.

Over the weekend, one of our Career and Transition teachers, Megan Pitts, was honored by the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Megan received the Outstanding Related Services Provider Award. Thank you, Megan, for your unwavering dedication, expertise, and the profound impact you have on the students and families you serve.

We also want to congratulate the seniors on our Boys Tennis, Baseball, and Girls Soccer teams! We were honored to celebrate these athletes during their Senior Nights last week. We wish them the absolute best as they head toward bright futures beyond Woodson.

Additionally, we recently held a special recognition for four incredible students: Jude Hanlon, Aiden Wang, Daniel Moreth, and Sophia Han. Joined by a representative from Blood Cancer United, we celebrated the fact that these students raised an amazing $60,000 for cancer research! They join a long tradition of philanthropy here; over the years, Woodson students have raised over $250,000 for this cause. It is simply unbelievable what our young people can achieve when they lead with their hearts.

If you weren’t able to make it out to Sweeney Todd this past weekend, you missed some truly breathtaking performances. However, it’s not too late! We have three more shows this weekend on Friday at 7:00 PM, and Saturday at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. We hope to see you in the audience for one of these final shows.

We officially kicked off testing season this week with AP exams, administering over 3,000 tests! As we look toward SOL testing, please remember that students must bring their school-issued Chromebook and a charger. If a student has misplaced their charger, they should purchase one immediately. If you are bringing a personal backup charger, please ensure it is USB-C and at least 45W, as we may not have spares available on the day of testing.

Please join me in thanking our amazing staff this week. I encourage you to take a moment to reach out to a teacher, coach, counselor, or staff member who has made a difference in your student’s life. A simple note of gratitude often means more than you know.

Have a great week!

Megan Pitts

Student's Intention For Next School Year

If you know that your child will not be attending Woodson High School for the upcoming school year, please complete the official Student Intention Form as soon as possible.

Providing this information early is essential for our enrollment planning and helps ensure that your student's records are accurately processed for their transfer to a new school. You can download the required form at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/it110.pdf. Once completed, please submit the form to the Darlene Sheppard, dmsheppard@fcps.edu

Counselor Corner

We want to remind students that they have plenty of time to positively impact their grades or increase their academic momentum. Use the Academic Support padlet for content help and SOL released tests. We have tips on how to guard against procrastination and how to manage test anxiety.

AP testing begins May 4 and runs through May 15. Late testing for those who are approved runs the week of May 18. Families were sent instructional information last week and students received information from their teachers this week. The Woodson AP page has the testing schedule and other helpful information.

Additionally, students who plan to take a summer course should click here to register before classes fill up and close (specifically HPE and SD-Econ). FCPS allows any student to repeat one failed class through credit recovery. Registration is now open!

We hosted a successful field trip to the NOVA Annandale campus. As seniors look forward to their next chapter, NOVA is a great place to begin their journey. Students can look at transferrable degrees (Associate’s degree/AS..) if they intend to transfer to a university. Others who plan to secure training and enter the workforce may look at their career prep program (Associate of Applied Science/A.A.S.). We will host our last NOVA support session for seniors tomorrow, April 28 during Returns in the Career Center. Walk-ins are welcomed. There is a NOVA column on our College padlet which has an application guide and other helpful resources.

Spring 2026 SOL Testing

May 18 - Biology, Chemistry, Geosystems

May 19 - English: Reading

May 20 - Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry

______________________________________________________________

Across Virginia this spring, high school students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) tests.  An FCPS Frequently Asked Questions webpage (SOL High School Assessment Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)) provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Students may be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 20 and May 20. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify Woodson’s Assessment Coach, Kathleen Crosson, as soon as possible.

SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited

As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.
