Principal's Message

Good afternoon Roadrunner families,

As we approach Spring Break, we hope this time provides your family with an opportunity to rest, recharge, and enjoy meaningful time together. Whether you are traveling or staying close to home, these moments are a great chance to reconnect and create lasting memories.

We encourage all students to continue reading during the break. 15 minutes a day can make a big difference in maintaining and building strong reading skills. With the SOLs and end of year county assessments coming in April and May, this would be a great time to continue practicing the skills they have been working on in the classroom. Consider visiting the library and setting aside a family reading time each day. Here are some questions you can ask your child:

  • Who is the main character?
  • What is the setting? plot?
  • Ask a few questions on some of the harder vocabulary words

Spring Break is also a wonderful opportunity to incorporate learning into everyday activities. Cooking together is a fun way to practice math skills, measuring ingredients, doubling recipes, and timing steps, all of which reinforce important concepts in a real-world setting.

We also encourage families to limit screen time and take advantage of the warmer weather. Go for a walk, visit a park, ride bikes, or spend time outdoors enjoying the sun.

We wish all of our families a safe, relaxing, and joyful Spring Break!

Dr. Legagneur, Mr. Barton, Ms. Champion

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year, we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience.

April Early Release Wednesday Canceled

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day due to a recently announced special election affecting all FCPS schools.

Students will have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 29, which was previously an early release Wednesday for Lorton Station. This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.

Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.

Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online, by email, by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration party from HR. Encourage your community to show our staff that their hard work is appreciated
