Heather Cox Richardson’s letter today reminded me that it’s Human Rights Day. Established 70 years ago on December 10, 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly announced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In a very interesting post, she explains the origins of this day—I highly recommended reading it, I wanted to quote so much of it here. At the end, she observed, “The U.S. government did not recognize Human Rights Day this year.” That doesn’t surprise me. Trump has no idea what human rights are. A grand jury declined to re-indict Letitia James. It is a strong rebuke of Trump’s campaign of retribution.. Trump really hates windmills. Why? A federal judge ordered the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, the immigrant who was wrongfully expelled to El Salvador, “saying it was “troubling” that the Trump had kept him in custody for nearly four months while promising to re-expel him from the country without actually having done so.” Two health care proposals, one Democrat and one Republican were voted down by the house today, making it likely that Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, will expire at the end of the month. “[The GOP plan] would do nothing to prevent premiums from doubling, tripling or even quadrupling for millions of Americans. It would do nothing to lower the outrageous cost of healthcare or prescription drugs. It would do nothing to make it easier for Americans to see a doctor when they get sick,” said Senator Bernie Sanders. Speaker of the House Johnson said that the GOP is working on a new health care plan; I’ll believe it when I see it. This is so bad for so many Americans. People will die. It seems as though Trump wants to go to war; this as he praises himself to be such a peacemaker. Democrats and at least one Republican have condemned Wednesday’s seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker, some lawmakers are saying that this is Trump’s attempt at regime change by force. Even Republican Rand Paul said that, “seizing someone’s oil tanker is an initiation of war” and questioned whether “it’s the job of the American government to go looking for monsters around the world, looking for adversaries and beginning wars”. Chris Coons, a Democratic senator, said he was also alarmed at the administration’s actions: “I have no idea why the president is seizing an oil tanker and I’m fairly gravely concerned that he’s sleepwalking us into a war with Venezuela.” What Senator Coons said about Trump sleepwalking made me think of this below. What keeps Trump awake: The Epstein files probably keep him awake, too. That’s why he does all this hateful, distracting stuff. And: they stll have not been released. Thanks for being here.
