Ford Motor and Renault are partnering to develop small, affordable electric vehicles and light commercial vehicles for the European market to counter the growing threat from Chinese automakers like BYD and Changan. The first of two planned EVs will be manufactured at a Renault plant in France and will be released in 2028, filling a gap in Ford's lineup. The companies do not plan to merge.

A report by EY indicates a resurgence in the popularity of combustion engine vehicles as a result of policy reversals, trade wars and skepticism about electric vehicle infrastructure and costs. The report notes that 50% of global buyers plan to purchase a new or used combustion engine vehicle in the next two years, up 13 percentage points from 2024, and that preference for battery-electric and hybrid vehicles has dropped to 14% and 16%, respectively.

MotorTrend has named the Ford Maverick as its 2026 Truck of the Year, citing its engineering excellence, design advancements, efficiency, value and safety features. The Maverick offers more rear head and legroom than the Toyota Tacoma and nearly 90% of its bed capacity despite being smaller overall. The hybrid models are the most efficient combustion-powered pickups, with the front-wheel-drive version achieving 42 mpg in the city.

Detmar Logistics will begin using autonomous semitrucks from Aurora Innovation to haul proppants in Texas and New Mexico starting early next year, initially operating with a human driver before going fully driverless by the second quarter. The partnership marks the first time proppants will be trucked autonomously on public roads in the Permian Basin.
