Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, June 23.

In today's newsletter:

  • The long-vacant Big Timber Motel east of downtown Anchorage is set to be torn down in the coming weeks. It's part of the mayor’s push to clean up or scrap nuisance properties.

  • The challenger to U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan who shares the same name is appealing a decision by the state to remove him from the August primary ballot.

  • Two Anchorage Assembly members have called on George Martinez to resign from the body, saying that his alleged misuse of campaign funds has caused a “loss of public trust.”

In this week's Alaska history column, David Reamer tells the tale of the Steamship Bertha, which perished in Alaska waters in 1915. The SS Bertha was a wooden-hulled relic from before the gold rushes. Its demise was fueled by its cargo, which included 16 barrels of a material that can react violently to water.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast and rainy today with a high near 62 degrees. The forecast calls for more rain on Wednesday, but mostly sunny skies on Thursday. Daytime highs will range from the mid-60s to the mid-70s over the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
