Provided you know what to do with it, eyeliner can be one of the most impactful and versatile products in your makeup bag. You can smudge it, tight line it (which means putting it on or close to the waterline) or wing it out. For tips on mastering all three looks, we spoke to Taylor Momsen, the lead singer of the rock band the Pretty Reckless; the actress Amalia Yoo, who's currently starring in the Off Broadway play “Dad Don’t Read This”; and the London-based makeup artist Aoife Cullen, who’s known for her experimental looks, and whose clients include the singer Rebecca Black. - I genuinely don’t feel like myself if I don’t have dark eye makeup on. At around 13, I started borrowing my mom’s loose powder shadow to try to make a clean line above and below my eyes, but I could never get it precise. I quickly gave up on that concept and [decided] to embrace the mess.
- If I’m onstage, because I’m combating stage lights, I’ll look for the blackest shade I can find. I’m a big fan of MAC. First, I add their Paint Pot to my lash line with a liner brush, then smudge it over the lid with another brush. I layer that with the brand’s eye shadow in Carbon to get that really matte look.
- Then I add tons of mascara, like Too Faced’s Better Than Sex waterproof formula. For onstage looks, I’ll also press some glitter, either from Urban Decay or Pat McGrath, onto the lid. It catches the light and looks nice on Jumbotrons.
- Once I put base onto the rest of my face, I smudge the eye makeup further for the final effect. I’ll sometimes use a brush that isn’t covered in black, but still has some residue — but often my finger is actually the best brush.

- My mom was an ’80s and ’90s girl so, when I was younger, she always had the most beautiful tight-lined black eyeliner. I’d think, “When I get older, I’m going to do that.” These days, I love this eyeliner from Ilia because it’s retractable, and I’ll use it in brown if I don’t want to wear a lot of makeup but want my eyes to pop a little. I put it along my lash line rather than my waterline, tight lining just the top lid because doing the bottom can make my eyes look smaller. Then I take a small angled brush, like the MAC 263, and extend [the line] a teeny bit outward.
- Or you can use a cream shadow like Merit’s. Apply it with that same brush [in a thin line, where you would otherwise put traditional eyeliner]. You can clean up any excess shadow with a Q-Tip.
- I’ve gotten to do some great liner looks onstage. For “John Proctor is the Villain” [in which Yoo appeared on Broadway last year] my character was trying out a [thickly lined] goth look. The hair and makeup department gave me this melty balm from Byoma to get it off. Other times, I’ll use Aquaphor.

- Make sure your eyes are as dry as possible before you start. It’s important to skip skin care in this area if you’re going to be wearing a lot of makeup. Otherwise, it’ll break down whatever else you put on — even long-wear makeup.
- I love wooden kohl pencils. They’re always the darkest, creamiest and most malleable. I recommend the Wonderskin eyeliner and Urban Decay’s Zero liner. For gel liner, I’ll use the Maybelline one. Then I’ll add a liquid liner like MAC’s Brushstroke at the very end of my eye makeup routine, especially if I’m wearing a shimmer shadow, because that can sometimes fall onto the lash line and cause you to lose definition there.
- I’m a big believer in just getting the eyeliner on and then using other tools to perfect it. For a crisp, sharp line, the best thing to do is clean it up with a lip or concealer brush. My favorite is Spectrum Collections’ KJH Number 9 Brush. I’ll put a bit of concealer on it first — NARS is nice — or micellar water, and basically scratch along the sides [of the wing].
- Then I set everything with translucent powder. I love Huda Beauty’s Sugar Cookie or the Anastasia Beverly Hills loose powder. Sometimes I use primers, too, at the start, but honestly, as long as you don’t put skin care around your eyes and rely on powder, the makeup will not move.
