Noam Shazeer, the Google DeepMind researcher whose work underpinned the generative AI boom, is joining OpenAI, the AI firm told some staff Wednesday.
Shazeer, who left Google in 2021 to cofound a chatbot startup, Character.AI, rejoined Google’s AI team DeepMind in 2024 as part of a $2.7 billion deal to hire him back.
