A new round of U.S. tariffs took effect this week, raising duties on imports from dozens of countries to 15 percent or higher—potentially much higher in the case of India, which U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened with 50 percent tariffs because of the country’s purchase of Russian oil amid the war in Ukraine.
How India should manage its complicated relationship with the United States alongside its ties to U.S. adversaries, particularly China and Russia, has been a subject of spirited debate in the pages of Foreign Affairs (and on our podcast). “India’s preoccupation with promoting multipolarity through multialignment” impedes the tighter relationship with Washington that New Delhi needs to balance China, Ashley Tellis argued in our July/August issue.
