Good morning, Chicago.

The White Sox could be calling on the pitcher known as “Thor” to eat up some innings this season. The Sox signed Noah Syndergaard to a minor-league contract on Tuesday morning.

“Excited about that,” manager Will Venable said. “He’s got some work to do. He’ll go to Arizona. We’ll get him stretched out. There are a couple of things that I know we’ve highlighted we want to work on with him and see where we are at.”

Syndergaard last pitched in the majors in 2023, going 2-6 with a 6.50 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 18 starts for the Dodgers and Guardians. He is 59-47 with a 3.71 ERA and 928 strikeouts during 164 career outings (162 starts).

He made a splash with the Mets, finishing fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2015, earning All-Star honors in 2016 and placing eighth in the NL Cy Young Award voting that year.

Venable, playing for the San Diego Padres, went 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and two strikeouts against Syndergaard in 2015: “I’m shocked I put the ball in play against him at all, so I’ll take it.”
