What’s next in NYC’s mayoral election after Mamdani’s big primary showing

It's Wednesday in New York City, where Zohran Mamdani is set to win the Democratic primary for mayor.

The 33-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, who ran a grassroots campaign that inspired younger voters through a relentless focus on affordability, won a commanding 44% of first-choice ballots in yesterday's ranked-choice election, prompting former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to concede ahead of next week's final tally.

But the fight for Gracie Mansion is just beginning: In November, Mamdani will likely face Mayor Eric Adams, who sat out the Democratic primary but will run in the general election as an independent; Republican primary winner Curtis Sliwa; centrist attorney Jim Walden; and possibly Cuomo again.
