Publication excerpt

"On 10 May 2025, the UK Government published the immigration White Paper “Restoring control over the immigration system”. The White Paper has been hotly anticipated and sets out a number of significant changes to the UK immigration system. These changes are likely to be implemented in stages and many will be subject to consultation.

The White Paper comes after two years of high net migration in the UK. In the year ending June 2024, net migration to the UK was 728,000, a 20% decrease from the 906,000 recorded in the year ending June 2023, which had been the highest on record. These statistics had already led to a major change to the immigration system in 2024, with large minimum salary increases for sponsored Skilled Workers and restrictions on dependants in certain work and student routes."
