Hello Braddock Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the first few steamy-days of summer vacation! If you’re still looking for summer activities for the kids, there are plenty of options at our schools with open spots. We also wanted to take a moment to celebrate the successes of our spring teams and two very special 5th-graders. See below for details on the camps, teams and more.

Here at the school board, our work continues. This week we had a very productive work session which covered a variety of topic areas:

  • Our oversight duties include reviewing the annual audit report. Though there were a few areas that needed improvement, overall the report was very positive and showed the hard work our staff does everyday to make sure they meet and exceed standards of accountability.
  • The Foundation for Applied Technical Education presented details of the hands-on program that allows students to explore careers in construction and real estate, and shared information on the latest student-built house now available for sale in Springfield.
  • The Pre-K and Early Head Start Parent Policy Committee went over the progress we are making in pre-K and head start classrooms. These programs have proven records of boosting student achievement down the line.
  • The Board had robust discussions on ways to improve the budget process for the next year to build support, allow for the greatest transparency, and provide a framework for stakeholders to work together.
  • The next steps in the boundary review process were delineated as the Boundary Review Committee will be working over the summer to incorporate the community feedback into the next set of maps as well as weigh access to curriculum, transportation issues and more.

Over the summer, we will be sharing any new developments and keeping you up to date on school board matters. As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to my office at braddockconstituent@fcps.edu.

All my best,

Rachna

2025 ExploraVision Competition National Winners

Thank you to Logan Williams, a fifth-grade teacher at Willow Springs Elementary School, for sharing this information about two students at the school. He says, “I’m thrilled to share that two of our amazing 4th-grade students at Willow Springs, Luciana(from the Springfield District) and Scarlett (from Braddock District) (pictured below) have been named national winners in the 2025 ExploraVision competition — one of only eight teams selected from across the country! Their project, Electro-BUZZ, is an innovative response to the global pollination crisis. Using AI-powered drones fueled by solar, wind, and kinetic energy, Luciana and Scarlett created a system that mimics the behavior of bees to help pollinate crops. Their design also includes a Smart Hive that monitors environmental conditions and improves pollination efficiency.  Great work!!
