A Message from the Principal

Greetings Irving Families,

We have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our staff this week and are so grateful to the PTA for all that they did this week to make our staff feel appreciated. We noticed all the fine details of decorations, notes, and the displays to make the treats and gifts extra special. We are so grateful to have such a thoughtful community and PTA!

During this week, our 8th grade students took the Science SOL. The students did an excellent job throughout the testing session. Next week all students will take SOLS on Monday, May 12 (Reading) and Thursday, May 15 (Math). Please help your child remember to get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast, and bring a bottle of water (labeled with their name) to school so they can stay hydrated throughout the day. We know our students are ready to show what they know and will do an excellent job next week.

Speaking of water bottles - our Lost and Found is overflowing! If you are missing a water bottle, lunch box, or clothing - please ask your child to check our lost and found. If you would like to check the lost and found after school from 2:30-3:30, please check in, in the main office and a staff member will walk you to the cafeteria. All items not picked up by June 20, will be donated.

Lastly, we are just 3 weeks away from our annual 8th grade celebration on Friday, May 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm. To have a fun and successful evening for our 8th grade students, we need your assistance with chaperoning and snacks/drinks donations. This event is for ALL our 8th grade students only. If you would be willing to chaperone the 8th grade Celebration, please complete this Chaperone Sign-up form. If you are willing to donate snacks or drinks, please make your donation selections through this Snack Donation Sign-up. If you would prefer to have snack items delivered from a site like Amazon- items may be sent to: Atten: Tiffany Cheatham, Irving MS 8th grade dance, 8100 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152. For more details about the celebration, please see below.

Take Care!

Important Irving Information

8th Grade Celebration

Friday, May 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm

  • The purpose of this event is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
  • Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend.
  • The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event
  • This event will be in our 7th grade gym and out on our tennis courts/black top (weather permitting). Students should be comfortable to dance, play games, and likely take a lot of pictures in our photo section with the horseman backdrop.
    • In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a polo type shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 5 minutes of arriving…).
  • Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
  • We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
  • We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration and/or donate snacks. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.

Library News

We are so proud of Irving’s Battle of the Books Team that competed in the cross-county competition at Fairfax High School on Wednesday evening, April 23rd.  Ten students from Irving made up the team that battled against 15 other groups from other middle-school FCPS schools.  Irving placed in a solid 5th place among all 16 teams.  The point differential among the top-six places was only 7 points.  Congratulations to these students who committed to reading and remembering the details from the 15 BOTB titles for this school year.

Seventh-grade English classes have been visiting this week for students to borrow a choice-reading fiction title.  What has your child selected to read?  These books will not only be used for a project, but also can be good things to have in a backpack to engage with during upcoming SOL testing.  Once students finish testing, they often have time to read; this is a perfect opportunity to make progress in their English-class novel!

And, in our “Irving Says” poll, 64 % students reported that they would rather “not be allowed to IMBIBE sodas,” than the 36% of students who would rather “not be allowed to eat CONFECTIONS.”  Is that a hard decision for you??
