Good afternoon. It’s Friday, May 9.

In today's newsletter:

  • Alaska school superintendents said that Gov. Mike Dunleavy told them he would veto a bipartisan education bill, and potentially reduce school funding in the budget, unless lawmakers approve his education policy priorities.

  • An Anchorage judge denied a request to halt a state-sponsored predator control program that has so far killed 180 bears in Southwest Alaska. But in the same ruling, the judge criticized the state's effort as circumventing a prior court ruling that found the program unlawful.

  • If you’re allergic to birch trees, you probably already know: Tree pollen counts in Anchorage are off the charts at the moment. A local allergy clinic recorded the highest pollen reading in five years this week.

We've got a sunny weekend ahead of us in Anchorage, and there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy it. From stage performances and a 5K run to a playoff hockey game, check out these things to do around the city.

Anchorage weather

It's sunny today with a high near 56 degrees. We'll continue to enjoy sunny skies through the weekend, but the forecast calls for rain starting on Monday. Daytime temperatures will climb to the high 50s this weekend before dipping back into the low 50s next week.
