Message From Mrs. Burke

Dear Edison Families,

A BIG THANK YOU to our incredible instructional staff for everything they do to teach, support, and care for our students each and every day. This week, we had a blast celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week with a Wicked-themed celebration. From visiting the Emerald City to following the Yellow Brick Road and decoding secret messages, our staff truly enjoyed the journey. One week is certainly not enough to capture the deep gratitude we feel for all that they do.

A huge shoutout to our amazing PTSA for organizing a delicious faculty lunch, sponsored by Bonefish Grill. Our teachers felt seen, celebrated, and very appreciated. Thank you as well to all of our parents who donated their time, gift cards, and other items to make the week special. We could not have pulled it off without the PTSA’s partnership.

Speaking of which — we are still looking to fill a few key PTSA positions for the 2025–2026 school year, including the role of PTSA President. If you're interested in being part of this important work that supports our entire school community, please email: president.edisonptsa@gmail.com.

This week also marked our first full week of weapons detection screening, and I’m happy to share that things went smoothly. We've improved each day and are now able to move students through the process more efficiently. A reminder to families and students who drive: please be sure to leave early enough to navigate the screening process. If you are dropped off or park after 8:05 AM, there’s a high chance you’ll be late to first period. All four entrances open at 7:30 AM, so plan accordingly to be on time and ready to start the day.

We are also in the middle of IB and SOL testing, and we want our students to feel confident and prepared. Please help us by making sure students who are testing get a good night’s sleep and eat something in the morning — it really does make a difference.

This week, we had the chance to honor some of our senior athletes:

  • Tuesday: Softball and Girls Lacrosse
  • Thursday: Boys Lacrosse
  • Tonight: Boys Soccer (rescheduled due to storms)

Thank you to all the families who came out to celebrate these students and their dedication to their teams.

Finally, at our faculty meeting this week, we recognized two of our staff members — Chip Armstrong and Greg Dombrowski — who were honored by FCPS Cares for their quick action and care in providing the Heimlich maneuver to assist one of our students. Their calm response and commitment to student safety made a big impact, and we are grateful for them.

Our JROTC program also held their Pass and Review and annual inspection out front this week. I was proud to participate and inspect our incredible cadets — their discipline and pride were on full display.

Wishing all the mothers in our Edison community a very Happy Mother’s Day. I hope you feel celebrated and appreciated this weekend.

Mrs. Burke

PTSA Needs You!

Our PTSA is a vital part of what makes Edison such a special place. From supporting student scholarships and teacher mini-grants to organizing our All Night Grad Party, celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, and marking joyful traditions like cupcakes on Edison’s birthday—our PTSA is the heartbeat of many of our most meaningful moments. I work closely with our current president and PTSA leadership team, and together, we help shape a school environment that supports both staff and students.

Please contact the Edison PTSA President at president.edisonptsa@gmail.com to find out how you can make a difference!

FCPS Summer Internship Pilot Program

FCPS is proud to introduce the inaugural Summer Internship Program, a six-week, paid, in-person opportunity for a limited number of current FCPS high school students or FCPS alumni enrolled in post-secondary education.

This program is designed to provide valuable hands-on work experience, professional development, and project-based learning across various FCPS departments. Locations include Gatehouse Administration Center, Willow Oaks Administrative Center, and other FCPS central office facilities. The internship program dates are Monday, June 30 through Friday, August 8.

Interns will support the staff in their selected department with projects and participate in weekly professional development workshops on topics such as personal finance, communication skills, resume writing, and networking. Interns will shadow staff completing mission-critical projects that prepare the division for the upcoming school year.

By participating in this program, interns will gain real-world experience that directly aligns with the principles of the Closing the Achievement Gap (CAG) Framework and supports FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation, which aims to equip every student with the skills to thrive in life after high school.

The application window opens today and closes on Friday, May 16.

Full details of the program can be found on the FCPS website.
