Spotlight on Specials: STEAM

Kindergarten: Coding

Our Kindergarten students became introductory computer programmers through our engaging unit using Scratch Jr! They embarked on their coding journey by first learning how to bring their digital characters, or sprites, to life. They then progressed to programming one sprite to move across the screen and warmly greet another. The creativity really blossomed when our young coders designed their own solo sprite talent shows, using movement and looks blocks. Finally, they tackled the exciting challenge of programming multiple sprites to run their programs simultaneously, fostering an understanding of parallel processes.

First Grade: Algorithms and Bee-Bots

Our First-grade students have been building a strong foundation in computer science by exploring the concept of algorithms. They practiced creating and writing step-by-step instructions to complete a variety of tasks, developing their logical thinking and sequential reasoning abilities. Building upon this understanding, the First graders were introduced to our Bee-Bots, and learned about their various functions. They then took their knowledge of algorithms to a whole new level by programming their Bee-Bots to perform a synchronized class dance!

2nd Grade

Our 2nd graders have put on their entrepreneurial hats as part of their Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit in economics! Tasked with creating a device to make teachers’ jobs easier, students chose from a list of real classroom needs—like personal paper graders, automatic art room cleaners, silent pencil sharpeners, book washers, and library organizers. They’re learning about supply and demand, product design, and marketing, all while using their creativity to solve everyday problems for our teachers. We can’t wait to see these imaginative inventions come to life!

3D Printing Fun  Grades 3-6 Over the last few weeks, the students in grades 3-6 had a blast learning how to design and print their very own keychains using our 3D printer! From choosing shapes to adding personalized text, they got a hands-on introduction to digital design and fabrication. It was exciting to see their creativity come to life layer by layer!

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Additional immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades.

  • All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
    • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
    • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
    • As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

    • To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.

Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers.
