“Tonight, the White House informed Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden that she has been relieved of her position,” a spokesperson confirmed in an email to PW on May 8. Hayden was the first woman and first Black person to head the nation’s library, which she had done since 2016. more
Story Image NEA Literary Grants Terminated, Staff Depart as Trump Proposes Eliminating the Agency
At least 38 publishers and a number of literary organizations received letters from the National Endowment for the Arts saying their grants were withdrawn or terminated, while four literary arts staffers at the NEA said their last day will be on May 30. The cuts follow the Trump administration’s 2026 budget proposal, which calls for eliminating the NEA, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Library and Museum Services. more

In welcome news for the Institute of Museum and Library Services and two more federal agencies targeted for dismantling by a presidential executive order, the District Court of Rhode Island has granted 21 states’ attorneys the preliminary injunction they sought in Rhode Island v. Trump. more
Story Image Percival Everett, Tessa Hulls Among 2025 Pulitzer Prize Winners
Everett’s novel James and Hulls’s graphic memoir Feeding Ghosts were among the seven books recognized by this year’s Pulitzer Prizes, announced May 5. Authors Kathleen DuVal, Edda L. Fields-Black, Marie Howe, Benjamin Nathans, and Jason Roberts also took home awards. more

Bivins, who has led the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York since 2021, will be in conversation with Randy Winston, creative director for fiction at the Black List. This year’s U.S. Book Show, set for June 3, will also feature a conversation with Simon & Schuster’s Jonathan Karp and Hachette’s David Shelley and panels on translation, audiobooks, book-to-screen adaptations, and more. more
