Message from Mr. Greata

This past Saturday, a group of students and staff traveled to Buckingham County—the birthplace of Dr. Carter G. Woodson—for our second annual visit to participate in Carter G. Woodson Celebration Day. While there, we had the opportunity to interview individuals such as Joyce Gooden and Jesse Woodson Johnson who have made significant contributions to Buckingham County and hear powerful personal stories, including reflections from members of the first class to integrate local schools. We look forward to sharing these moving interviews with you in the coming weeks.

We also had a wonderful time celebrating our incredible teachers and staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Teachers and staff are the heart of our school community—igniting curiosity, nurturing growth, and shaping the future with every lesson they teach and in every act of service. You lift us all up!

I also want to thank everyone who helped make it special. A big shoutout to our PTSO for the fantastic snack wagon on Friday and to our student leaders for organizing a delicious staff breakfast and a gift card raffle. Your thoughtful gestures meant a lot to our school!

Our "Secret Staff Spirit Week" added some fun and mystery to the week, as staff dressed up as their childhood dream jobs—everything from astronauts to zookeepers –, refreshed themselves using anything but a water bottle, or cozied up on pajama day. It was a joy to see our educators connect with their inner child and have a little fun with their outerwear.

On Wednesday, we celebrated both National School Nurse Day and National Interpreter Appreciation Day. Carter G. Woodson High School is proud to be the only high school in FCPS with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing program, and we are fortunate to work with an incredible team of interpreters throughout the year. Thank you to Alice Maggio, Christina Todd, Julien Slate, Kathy Martin Comer, Laura Kempter, Melissa Henning, and Nicole Suris.  In addition to our FCPS interpreters, we are also served by and grateful for the many interpreters that are contracted.

We are equally grateful for our outstanding health team—Celeste Delahunty and Josephine Namaganda—who care for our students each and every day. Thank you for all that you do.

We capped off the week with our student-run Cav-ienated Coffee Shop, which featured live music from Mr. Bickel’s music class—a fantastic and uplifting way to close out the week.

Don't forget—this is the final weekend to catch our production of Mamma Mia! Performances are Friday and Saturday. Also, stay up to date on all of our athletic events by visiting www.woodsonsports.com

Wishing you a restful and joyful weekend!

Join Us At The FCPS Summer Extravaganza

Date: Saturday, May 10
Time: 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Location: Woodson High School Parking Lot (9525 Main St, Fairfax, VA 22031)

Let’s transform summer learning together!

The FCPS Summer Extravaganza is an exciting event that helps families imagine all the possibilities to continue learning over the summer. This is possible by showcasing interactive and immersive activities for children and the power of collaboration across FCPS offices and community partners.

Several departments within Fairfax County Public Schools—including Transportation, the Office of Multilingual Learners (ESOL Services), the Hispanic Educators Association, Career and Transition Services, Get2Green, the Office of Intervention and Prevention Services, and Safety and Security—are collaborating to create a day filled with engaging and educational activities for all FCPS students. In addition, various student school clubs will be in attendance, showcasing their initiatives and contributions. This year, we're excited to introduce the Student Program Marketplace, a new feature where students will present and sell their handmade goods, with proceeds supporting their respective programs. This initiative is supported and led by Educate Fairfax; a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for Fairfax County Public Schools students

The Summer Extravaganza will feature:

  • Activities for children of all ages that inspire curiosity and a love of learning
  • Opportunities for adults to learn how to support student well-being and academic success
  • A special section of student-led activities

We invite you to attend and engage with our FCPS community.

Alumni Visits

We love to see our alumni, however, due to year-end testing and instruction, alumni visits will only be allowed after school hours. If you plan to visit after hours, please reach out to the teacher(s) you would like to visit to make sure they will be available after school.

Summer Student Intern Program

FCPS is launching a Summer Internship Program, a six-week, paid, in-person opportunity for FCPS high school students or recent alumni enrolled in post-secondary education. This program is designed to provide valuable hands-on work experience, professional development, and project-based learning across various FCPS departments.

Interns will support professional staff in their selected department with projects and participate in weekly professional development workshops on topics such as personal finance, communication skills, resume writing, and networking. Interns will shadow staff completing mission-critical projects that prepare the division for the upcoming school year.

Learn more about this internship program, which supports FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation.

AP Exam Information

Attention students who are registered to take an AP exam at Woodson High School during the May 5-16 AP exam window.

Please take the time to review the College Board terms and conditions through their website prior to your testing date, as things may have changed or been updated.

As a student at Woodson High School, expectations for testing are as follows:

Arrival:

  • AM test takers will arrive NO LATER than 7:30am in Cafeteria B.
  • PM test takers will arrive NO LATER than 11:30am in their designated location (check fcpsschools.net email for your exact location).
  • Students need to arrange for their own transportation on exam mornings as the buses will not drop off students in time for the start of the exam.

Dismissal:

  • Students will be dismissed at the end of the exam, once everyone has finished.
  • If your student has an afternoon exam, the exam will not conclude until after the regular school day ends and buses depart. Therefore, students taking an afternoon exam will need to arrange for their own transportation home after the conclusion of the exam.

Testing location information and materials:

  • Cell phones, smart watches and any other electronic devices are prohibited and may not be on the student. Students should leave these items at home and not bring them to school on an exam day. If brought into school on a school day, these items should be left in the student’s locker or car (or a friend’s locker or car if they don’t have their own storage location).
  • Students will bring their approved belongings (pencils, pens, calculator, snacks) in a CLEAR bag. Backpacks are NOT allowed.

Digital exams:

  • Students must bring their FULLY CHARGED school-issued laptop and charger for digital exams. Students will not be admitted to their testing location without their laptop. Loaners laptops are NOT available.

If you have questions, please contact Woodson AP exam coordinators Jamie Korpacz, Kathleen Crosson, or Pam Todd.

Required Immunizations for Rising 12th Graders

Additional immunizations are required for students entering 12th grades.

  • All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
    • To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.

Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time. Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.
