Chelmsford trail rechristened in honour of late councillor: While he loved classic cars and motorsports, the fastest thing you will find on a route named in his honour would be a bicycle or scooter.

The Whitson River Trail in Chelmsford is now officially dedicated to the late councillor Gerry Montpellier, who represented Ward 3 prior to his unfortunate passing in February of 2024.

This peaceful path amid greenery may be a far cry from an auto shop or a racetrack, but as Mayor Paul Lefebvre noted, the outdoors and active transportation were also things Montpellier deeply valued.

“He loved this community and he knew how important spaces like this trail are — not just for recreation but for bringing people together and connecting with nature,” said Lefebvre at a ceremony Thursday. “Gerry advocated for this trail, championed improvements to it, believed it deserved a name. And now it carries his.”

Greater Sudbury Police officer's career
over after altercation with motorcyclist

https://www.thesudburystar.com/news/these-sudbury-area-families-still-waiting-to-be-heard

What started as an attempt to stop a speeding motorcyclist on Highway 35 a year ago led to a brawl that has likely ended the career of a Greater Sudbury Police officer.

During the altercation, Danny Mathieu put the officer in a headlock and used a conductive energy device on him. Mathieu also licked and bit the officer on the face.

In Sudbury court, Mathieu admitted what he did by pleading guilty to five of the 19 charges he was facing.

“I do want to apologize to officer (Mark) Bennett for this incident,” Mathieu said. “If I could, I would go back in time and I would definitely deal with it differently and not be in this situation.”

Mathieu, 40, had pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm; flight from police; assault a police officer while resisting arrest; stunt driving (under the Highway Traffic Act); and driving while suspended (also under the Highway Traffic Act).

From Adanac to Whistler, Ella Prosperi
flew high, fast on alpine slopes

There is truth in the saying it’s not the destination, but the journey.

In the case of 12-year-old Ella Prosperi, the journey and destination were noteworthy.

Perhaps the pinnacle of her season was being the first U14 Sudbury Adanac skier to qualify for Team Ontario and ski at the prestigious Whistler Cup, April 9-13.

But the journey began three months earlier, when she did not finish any slalom runs at the Mealey Classic in Searchmont near Sault Ste. Marie. She hit gates, not to mention a few body parts.

“I don’t know (what happened). I felt confident, but I think I was getting caught,” she reflects now, fresh off finishing fourth in her 2012 birth year group and 20th overall at the Whistler Cup.

As Adanac Ski Team head coach David Hunt tells it, though, slalom skiing is all about linking 10 turns or ski gates together.
