Cubbie News
Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,
It has been an exciting week as we celebrate our exceptional staff at Cub Run. Thank you for joining us in honoring the incredible work our teachers and staff do throughout the year. We are grateful for all you have shared with our staff and the generous donations to our PTA to show our appreciation throughout the week!
We also kicked off our SOL testing in grades 3 and 4 this morning. Our Cubbies worked so hard on their Reading SOL and we are proud of their efforts. Grades 5 and 6 have their first SOL tomorrow morning. We appreciate you all partnering with us so our Cubbies can do their best. It is important for our students to be on-time to school because testing begins soon after arrival. It also helps our students to have a well-balanced breakfast and a good night’s sleep.
We are looking forward to meeting our rising kindergarten families this evening as we prepare to welcome the class of 2038. This evening, we will also be hosting our final PTA meeting of the 24-25 school year. We hope you can join us at 7:00pm!
Warm Regards,
Melissa Miller, Principal
Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

SCA Spirit Day: Sports Day!
Positivity Project
This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This means noticing and valuing the world's beauty and people's skills and not taking things for granted.
Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence involves recognizing and enjoying what is admirable. Positive psychology identifies three types of goodness: physical beauty (like sunsets or music), exceptional skills or talents, and moral goodness (like character strengths). Appreciating beauty can inspire awe, skills can generate admiration, and moral goodness can elevate us. These feelings help us forget ourselves and find more joy and meaning in the world.
This strength helps individuals experience positive emotions and connect with the world around them. It is outward-facing, focusing on external beauty and excellence, often leading to deep absorption in awe or admiration, which can help alleviate anxieties. It is also linked to other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.
To practice and encourage this strength at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
Chronic Absenteeism
For school year 2024-2025, school accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s new Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.
As of May 8, Cub Run's chronic absenteeism rate is at 9.9%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can continue with a chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow. We All Belong Here!
In FCPS, we all belong. From the first day of school, to the last day of school, every child matters. If your student is having a hard time finishing the year strong and attending school, please contact a trusted adult at our school — a teacher, counselor, or administrator. Let’s transform summer learning together!
The FCPS Summer Extravaganza is an exciting event that helps families imagine all the possibilities to continue learning over the summer. This is possible by showcasing interactive and immersive activities for children and the power of collaboration across FCPS offices and community partners.
Several departments within Fairfax County Public Schools—including Transportation, the Office of Multilingual Learners (ESOL Services), the Hispanic Educators Association, Career and Transition Services, Get2Green, the Office of Intervention and Prevention Services, and Safety and Security—are collaborating to create a day filled with engaging and educational activities for all FCPS students. In addition, various student school clubs will be in attendance, showcasing their initiatives and contributions. This year, we're excited to introduce the Student Program Marketplace, a new feature where students will present and sell their handmade goods, with proceeds supporting their respective programs. This initiative is supported and led by Educate Fairfax; a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for Fairfax County Public Schools students
The Summer Extravaganza will feature:
